How your garbage disposal works
Kitchen garbage disposals mount to the underside of a sink and collect solid food waste in a grinding chamber. When you turn it on, a spinning disc — the impeller plate — turns rapidly, forcing food waste against the outer wall of the chamber. This pulverizes the food into tiny bits that wash through holes in the chamber wall. (Contrary to popular belief, disposals don't use sharp blades — just two blunt metal impellers.)
